The Kurdish New Year, Newroz, was forbidden to be celebrated under Saddam Hussein. Legend speaks of the fall of a tyrant who lived on a mountain and terrorized the people. In Akre, it is now celebrated opulently; a torch is lit on the mountain, and a snake of light winds along the hills down into the valley. The celebrations attract thousands of people. You can't be everywhere with a camera, plus there's fire, torches, and gasoline all around. Every year I changed my strategy. One year I started on the mountain, where it all begins. Another year I waited in a narrow gorge where men and women come running with torches. And another time, right on a terrace in the city, overlooking the rooftops.
Nourúz
Kurdský nový rok, Nourúz, se za Saddáma Husajna slavit nesměl. Legenda totiž mluví o pádu tyrana, který žil na hoře a terorizoval lid. V Akré se nyní slaví opulentně, na hoře zapálí louč a světelný had se vine po pahorcích do údolí. Oslavy přilákají tisíce lidí. Člověk nemůže být s fotoaparátem všude, navíc kolem oheň a louče, benzin. Každý rok jsem měnil strategii. Jednou začal na hoře, kde to celé začíná. Další rok jsem číhal v úzké soutězce, kam přibíhají muži a ženy s loučemi. Jindy přímo na terase ve městě, s výhledem na střechy domů.
