To photograph the “crown imperial” in the mountain slopes of Iraqi Kurdistan—which the locals call shler—you need to have your people in the area who will tell you: “Now. They are blooming now.” And then guide you safely through the minefields right to them. “Not another step further.” I was taken there by the peshmerga Abdullah Osman Abdulah.
